Author Visits
I'm an elementary/middle school teacher with over 20 years experience, and I've learned as much from my students as they've learned from me! I'd love to present a writing workshop to your school or group. I'm excited to offer the following writing workshops for schools, grades 4-8:
1) Creating Memorable Characters- How do authors create characters that the reader will stick with right to the end of the story? In this fun and interactive workshop, students will use prewriting techniques to create well-rounded characters. We will also study examples of characters we love and discuss that magic ingredient that makes us want to follow the character anywhere.
2) Revision to the Rescue! You've written a rough draft, and now you're ready to check spelling and punctuation and type up a final draft. But wait! You've forgotten the most important part-- the art of revision!
In this hands-on workshop, you'll take one of your rough drafts and learn to work with a critique partner, giving and receiving constructive criticism just like a professional author. You'll then learn to use revision techniques to improve and strengthen your story.
3) Squishy, Dazzling, Smash-Boom-Pop! In this sensory approach to descriptive writing, students will explore their 5 senses and learn to write descriptive passages that bring the setting to life for the reader.
4) The Road to Publication- I'll share my journey to publication, beginning with the spark of an idea up to an offer of a publishing contract. This presentation will answer the question: "What does it take to get published?" It will include some interactive student participation as well as Q & A .
DETAILS:
My honorarium is $200/day for local schools which includes 4 presentations, lasting 45-60 minutes each.
Journey to Publication can be presented to multiple classes at the same time, but workshops are best suited for individual classrooms.
I would love to sign books for students and will be glad to direct you to a local bookseller to order books!
I will need a Smart Board or projector for my presentation.
For a short time, I am offering free author visits (Journey to Publication) when books are preordered.
If you are looking for a different type of workshop to suit your students' needs, please let me know.
